WotR Magic - Updates to the Rules for the Spells of Wilderness [Part 3/7]

The Spells of Wilderness are mostly a Good Army set, existing within the Elven Army and with the Istari (Wizards) - namely Radagast. Here is the list of models which can use the Spells of Wilderness:

As you can see above, the only original Evil Hero that had access to the Wilderness Spells is Durzhag the Beastcaller. With the release of Ashrak the Spiderkin, we've included the Spells of Wilderness (similar to Durzhag) when porting his profile from SBG to WotR, as well.

The set of Magic Users that are Spell Mastery 1 include the Elven Stormcaller, and Ashrak the Spiderkin. They cannot of course use Focus Rolls to make multiple spell casts.

The other remaining Heroes have a Spell Master of 2 or greater.

Thanks to Calum for suggesting the update to the clarification of Nature's Wrath when used in conjunction with the Special Rule for Pathfinder (Master). In the near future there will be a series of posts about the order of resolution for Fates, Fortunes, Magic, Standard Actions, Heroic Actions, and Epic Actions that will provide additional detail about the decision that was made above. Furthermore, after a little more thought, the case where Entangle and Nature's Wrath are used in conjunction should have some occurring effect - so that was added to the Note for Nature's Wrath, as well.

Similarly, a little more clarification was also added to the Entangle Spell for the effect of the Pathfinder (Master) Special Rule. Any other thoughts?

  1. How does the appropriate Pathfinders special rule affect if you are "in" difficult terrain when working out Nature's Wrath?

    1. Calum, Very well thought out ... I've added a Note to the Nature's Wrath Spell and also included the case where Entangle is cast first on a formation and then followed up with Nature's Wrath. Let me know if that sufficiently answers the question that you had about it.

    2. I assume that Pathfinders (Woodlands/Mountains) work the same way if you were in a piece of difficult terrain covered by those rules.

    3. Exactly - I appreciate your input; have you looked through the other edits to see if there are any other logical "gotcha's" like this one? Let me know if you find anything else - it only takes a few moments to edit if there is something requiring clarification.

    4. After having a quick look through the other Magic edits nothing jumped out at me. I'll have a look through the other edits when I get a moment.

    5. After reading through the Epic Heroes' Special Rules I only noticed three things that seemed a bit iffy. I might be incorrect but haven't been able to find my book to check. Firstly for the Bestow Terror special rule, in the WotR rulebook I think it mentions that when charged by multiple terror causing formations you only ever take one test but you haven't mentioned this. Secondly does Baruk Khazad prevent Gimli's formation from shooting, you've only mentioned moving and charging. Finally Aragorn's Epic Journey mentions that the formation cannot charge, shoot or enter defensible terrain on the turn they Epic Journey but doesn't cover if they can enter defensible terrain as part of the Epic Journey.

Those were the only things I noticed. If I think of anything else I'll leave another comment.

As a side note how are the profiles for the new units added in the Hobbit coming along? Someone on The One Ring had posted some of the profiles but I'm looking forward to your profiles.

    6. I was also having a look at the cost analyses in order to update the Battlescribe repository I created for me and a friend and I was a bit confused about how the costs of heroes in legendary formations affects the cost of the formation.

For example in vanilla WotR the Royal Guard of Arnor formation costs 115 + 30pc with Malbeth and Arvedui included in the cost. In the Gondor and Arnor points analysis you said that Malbeth the Seer should cost 30 points and i'm unsure about how this would affect the price of the legendary formation. Is the 115 cost supposed to be the cost per company + the values of the heroes within it or is it something else?

    7. Phew - I've got a lot to respond to! Real life (aka Work) has been keeping me busy; but here we go...

Bestow Terror - OK, I've added the following note to the end of the Bestow Terror and Terror Special Rules: "[Note: If a target formation is charged by more than one Terror causing formation or monster, then the target formation only has to take a single Courage Test for all formations and monsters that charge it. If the first Courage Test is passed, then it is assumed that all subsequent Tests are also passed.]"

Baruk Khazad - Good point - I've added the following to the last sentence in this special rule: "This special Shooting Attack does not prevent Gimil’s formation from moving at full speed, shooting during the Shoot Phase with range weapons, or charging that turn."

Epic Journey - Another good clarification point ... updated the official version of this Epic Action to read: "Move Aragorn’s formation anywhere on the board, irrespective of distance or terrain (including ending the Epic Journey within a defensible terrain feature). Aragorn’s formation may not charge, shoot or enter/exit a defensible terrain feature as part of a move in the same turn it goes on an Epic Journey."

Legendary Point Costs - See the Post that I've put up from 2 November 2014 about Legendary Formations and how to calculate the point costs - see if that helps to clear up the confusion that you've mentioned for the Royal Guard of Arnor.

    8. I'll definitely have a look at the Legendary Points Cost post, I missed it the first time.

The clarifications look good, The only one that I really thought was important was the terror one as the others seemed a bit common sense to me but I figured it was better to mention them than not.

Looking forward to more posts in the future.
