Updates and Extensions to the Rules for Fates - Infestation, Watcher in the Shadows, & Ignore Pain [Part 15/24]

Here is the next set of Fate Updates! The Watcher in the Shadows has been updated similar to the other Fortunes and Fates that place a new terrain piece (Seat of Ancient Power and Dark Shrine). Also, it has been increased to provide a bonus to the Evil Factions that are within its range, as well. Ignore Pain is a completely new Fate - It provides a one-turn boost to a monster's Resilience Value - thus ensuring that the monster will likely survive any fight that it is outnumbered in. Combining this with a monster that has any variation of the Hard to Kill rule makes it a very useful fate. Everyone enjoy! I'd love to hear any feedback or comments you may have.

WFMC Mobile - Art for Elven Kingdoms Companies and Formations of Various Supported Types [Part 3/11]

Next up is a couple of the Elf Formations, showing one of each type of formation that is supported in the current Elven Kingdom's list.

Starting over on the left, Glorfindel, Lord of the West is shown. He has all of his bane, hard to kill, striking order, etc... special rules as well. He is a monster formation that has the same base size as a cavalry model (similar to the cave troll). To his right is a formation of an Elven Chariot. This is one of the "new models" (i.e., one that was listed in Legions of Middle Earth that never had a model made or a profile, for that matter). Next, to the right, is a formation of Galadhrim Archers in 2x3 Configuration. As you can see (by the first icon under them), they have a Pathfinder included in the formation - in addition to their Pathfinder, Terror and Longbows (which are the other 3 icons). Next to the right is a formation of Galadhrim Knights in 5x2 Configuration. If you look at the profile for them, they have glaives in addition to their other special rules that are shown. Finally, at the bottom right is a 3x1 Configuration formation of Elven War Catapults.

So, there we go for Elves ... Still looking awesome! Also, I'm having a pretty good time with this, too - even though it is a little slow going.

Extending the Kingdom of Rohan List with Missing Profiles [Part 4/13]

The next Army List to be extended is the Kingdom of Rohan. Recall from Part 2/12 that the set of missing profiles for The Kingdom of Rohan Army List included the following:
      • King's Huntsman
      • Eomer, King of the Pelennor
      • Helm's Guard
      • Helm Hammerhand
      • King of Men
      • Rohan Outrider Captain
      • Eowyn, Heroine of Helm's Deep
      • Elfhelm
Each of the SBG profiles were considered carefully and determined the best means by which they would be integrated into the WotR list. It was finally decided that there would be 3 new command upgrade heroes, 2 new legendary formations, and 2 new epic heroes from the list above. Also, due to the addition of Eomer and Eowyn's new profiles their existing Epic Hero profiles have been adjusted to capture their function properly.

NEW COMMAND HEROES FOR THE KINGDOM OF ROHAN
      1. King's Huntsman
      2. King of Men
      3. Rohan Outrider Captain

      1) KING'S HUNTSMAN

The King's Huntsman is now a common hero upgrade option for the following formations:
      • Riders of Rohan Eored
      • Oathsworn Bowmen
The King's Huntsman has a new Special Rule Hunter. It allows the King's Huntsman to inflict automatic hits on enemy formations.

      2) KING OF MEN

A King of Men is the same common hero upgrade option that was mentioned in Gondor & Arnor and can be upgraded in the following formations:
      • Oathsworn Militia
      • Oathsworn Bowmen

As seen in the Gondor & Arnor post, the King of Men has been given a new Heroic Special Rule. This is Heroic Strike. The intent of Heroic Strike is to be similar to Epic Strike, just less potent.

NEW LEGENDARY FORMATIONS FOR THE KINGDOM OF ROHAN
      1. Eomer, King of the Pelennor
      2. Helm's Guard (including Helm Hammerhand)
      1) EOMER, KING OF THE PELENNOR
Rohan does have any Monsters within their Army List - so it is appropriate for Eomer to fill this role atop his horse on Pelennor Field.

        2) HELM'S GUARD
Rohan's Original Hero - Helm Hammerhand finally gets his profile!

UPDATED EPIC HEROES FOR THE KINGDOM OF ROHAN
        1. Eowyn, Shield-Maiden of Rohan
        2. Eomer, Marshal of the Riddermark
        1) EOWYN, HEROINE OF HELM'S DEEP
The existing profile for Eowyn, Shield-Maiden of Rohan within vanilla WotR has been updated for the Disguise rule and the By My Hand Shall You Fall rule. Both of these just didn't seem to have the "powerful effect" of worthy of an Epic Heroine. Furthermore, she was given a second Epic Action, Epic Defense to allow for her versatility. Likewise, the "correct" model is now shown in the profile as well - Eowyn wearing Rohirrim Armor; exposing her identity behind her disguise.

         2) EOMER, MARSHAL OF THE RIDDERMARK

NEW EPIC HEROES FOR THE KINGDOM OF ROHAN
        1. Eowyn, Heroine of Helm's Deep
        2. Elfhelm, Captain of Rohan
        1) EOWYN, HEROINE OF HELM'S DEEP

        2) ELFHELM, CAPTAIN OF ROHAN

Extending the Gondor & Arnor List with Missing Profiles [Part 3/13]

The first Army List to be extended is Gondor & Arnor. Recall from Part 2/12 that the set of missing profiles for the Gondor & Arnor Army List included the following:
          • Knight of the White Tower
          • Aragorn, King Elessar
          • Dunedain of Arnor
          • Faramir, Captain of Gondor
          • King of Men
          • Ranger of the North
Each of the SBG profiles were considered carefully and determined the best means by which they would be integrated into the WotR list. It was finally decided that there would be 4 new command upgrade heroes and 2 new epic heroes from the list above.

NEW COMMAND HEROES FOR GONDOR & ARNOR
          1. Knight of the White Tower
          2. King of Men
          3. Dunedain of Arnor
          4. Ranger of the North
          1) KNIGHT OF THE WHITE TOWER

The Knight of the White Tower is now a common hero upgrade option for the following formations:
          • Minas Tirith Warriors
          • Minas Tirith Archers
          • Minas Tiirth Knights
          • Citadel Guard
          • Guards of the Fountain Court
The Knight of the White Tower has a new Heroic Special Rule. This is the White Sword of Gondor. It allows the Knight of the White Tower to be more deadly in Heroic Duels.

          2) KING OF MEN

A King of Men is now a common hero upgrade option for the following formations:
          • Minas Tirith Warriors
          • Numenorean Warriors
          • Warriors of Arnor

Furthermore, the King of Men has been given a new Heroic Special Rule. This is Heroic Strike. The intent of Heroic Strike is to be similar to Epic Strike, just less potent.

          3) DUNEDAIN OF ARNOR

The Dunedain of Arnor is now a common hero upgrade option for the following formations:
          • Rangers of Gondor
          • Rangers of Arnor
They provide Terror to the formations in which they are including. This provides more opportunity for Gondor & Arnor to have access to that special rule.

          4) RANGER OF THE NORTH

Similar to the Dunedain of Arnor, the Rangers of the North are also common hero upgrade option for the following formations:
          • Rangers of Gondor
          • Rangers of Arnor
The Rangers of the North will provide the ability to use the Take Aim! Heroic Special Rule.

UPDATES TO LEGENDARY FORMATIONS FOR GONDOR & ARNOR

In order to be consistent with his SBG profile, Duinhir has been given his special rules for Go for the Eyes! and Critical Strike. These make this formation the "monster-killer" that they should be.

NEW EPIC HEROES FOR GONDOR & ARNOR
            1. Aragorn, King Elessar
            2. Faramir, Captain of Gondor
            1) ARAGORN, KING ELESSAR

            2) FARAMIR, CAPTAIN OF GONDOR

The existing profile within vanilla WotR has had its name changed to distinguish it from the new profile for Faramir. Likewise, the "correct" model is now shown in the profile as well - Faramir wearing Heavy Armor of Gondor; riding off to perform his Epic Sacrifice.

List of Units that are in Warbands, the Hobbit and SBG which are Missing from WotR [Part 2/13]

Having gone through the post with Tauriel as an example for converting profiles from SBG stat lines over to a WotR profile, I wanted to provide a consolidated list of others that are currently in progress of being converted to complete the entire set. As was mentioned in Tauriel's post, this will be rolled out in various parts (similar to quite a few other posts - I've noticed that trend).

WFMC - Formations Look Like REAL WotR Formations and Groundwork for Reconfiguration Costs Put in Place [Part 4/11]

Time is just flying by, it seems. Two more weeks have come and gone ... I've made some interesting changes over those last two weeks - hopefully everyone else will agree.

WHERE WE LEFT OFF WITH PART 3/10

Here is what the application looked like on the 23rd of March 2015. Where we left off with it from the Part 3/10 post is shown below:

It was looking really good (granted still being a little cramped) - and I had gotten in the formation reconfiguration combo box - and had it drawing to the OpenGL View.

Furthermore, I had hoped to make progress in the following areas over these last two weeks:
                • Hornblower/Drummer applicability to units based upon upgrade capabilities.
                • Add the math to do the reconfigurations
                • Add the math for rotation based upon configuration dimensions
Let's go through some of the changes that HAVE been made, and see what you think ... I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

MORE PROGRESS THAT HAS BEEN MADE

First off, having disabled fields to "force the workflow" through the application, it was a little difficult to see "what to do next" within the application. To help facilitate this, instead of simply having blank combo boxes that would enable - I've added the text "Select ..." to the next combo box that is intended to be used in the workflow. So, when the application is first launched, the Desired Faction combo box has the text to indicate that that is the first selection that should be made.

Once a Desired Faction is selected, the Desired Unit combo box enables (as it did before) and is now populated with the "Select ..." contents to indicate that that is the next selection to be made.

Similarly, once the Desired Unit is selected, then the Unit Type, Move Value and Number of Companies are populated (as before). Likewise, the Formation Configuration combo box is enabled and labeled to indicate that it is the next selection point.

Something else to mention at this point. As I had set for a goal from the list above, I wanted to enable and disable the "Simulate Hornblower" checkbox based upon the profile for the selected Desired Unit. I went through and for each unit determined if there was a "hornblower/drummer" option for the unit - and if there is (within the WotR core rules) I enabled the use of the field. If the unit had no command upgrade option for a hornblower, it was unchecked and disabled - and finally if the unit was a Legendary Formation that had a hornblower in the base cost for the command company, it is disabled and checked.

All that is working properly, now ... and I consider that a pretty big accomplishment in-and-of itself. In the case of the Oathsworn Militia that were selected above, they have the option for a hornblower to be included in the command company, so that option is enabled and unchecked to allow the selection to be made (as desired)
Selecting one of the valid configurations from the Formation Configuration combo box really starts to "bring on the sexy" from the last two weeks' worth of work...

The View no longer simply draws blue "empty" boxes, but actually draws the companies as if they are the literal bases in play. Here is the formation of Oathsworn Militia (an Infantry Formation) comprised of the 9 companies that make it up.
Similarly, here is a formation of Cloud of Bats (a Cavalry Formation) comprised of the 9 companies that make it up.
Both are drawn to scale and formations are comprised within the selected configuration. I personally think this gives the view a lot more of a "realistic WotR feel" and makes it seems more "tangible" (as if it were actual units being simulated).
Notice in both of the cases above, the "Baseline Config" line (just under the Formation Configuration combo box) has been updated (since it is effectively the next piece in the workflow). It is implying that the sliders should be adjusted to put the formation in the initial desired position, rotation and configuration and then baseline (using the "Set Baseline ..." button) to establish where the formation is going to be located for the first round.
Clicking on the "Set Baseline ..." button brings up a pop-up that indicates that baselining will set the current location of the formation and set the Round Number to be 1 (meaning that the formation is in its first round's position). Here the formation of 9 companies of Oathsworn Militia have been rotated and moved - and the Baseline has been set. Notice that the baseline configuration for the formation is populated and the round number (just above the move distances under the OpenGL View) has also been set to 1 (as indicated in the pop-up). I still need to reset the expended move value to be 0 and reset the Remaining move value back to the stat for the unit (plus/minus any movement modifiers that are checked) after the baseline has been set.

The point of baselining is so that when the formation configuration is changed after the baseline is established, the difference between the baseline configuration and the reconfiguration can be determined and the movement cost associated with the change can be calculated. For example, here is the same formation - and it has been changed within the Formation Configuration combo box to now be in 2x5 Configuration.

Making this change from 4x3 Configuration to 2x5 Configuration requires a move value of 6.41".

I've updated the database to have the full set of reconfiguration costs for any configuration to another. This ended up with over 450 rows for all the different permutations for Infantry and Cavalry. This was the "guts" of this entire application - since the intent is to provide a quick means to determine feasibility and cost for movement … Now that that's done, I still need to do something with pushing the value to the expended move cost … or checking to ensure that there is sufficient remaining move value available to accommodate the reconfiguration request. I have a feeling that doing such will be little harder than it simply sounds.

Another thing is - setting the Baseline now is the trigger for enabling the Reset Round button and the End Round button. Since the baseline has been saved, the Reset Round button now has something that it can "look up" and return the formation back to a given state. It will always look for the highest Round Number record to reset back to, as well.

The End Round button now also launches a pop-up. Clicking on OK will add to the Round Number by 1 (incrementing it to the next round) and save the location and configuration of the formation at its new updated location and configuration.

So, here the End Round button has been pressed after reconfiguring the formation to be in 2x5 Configuration. Notice that the Round Number under the View has been updated to 2 and the Baseline Configuration for round 2 is now the updated Formation Configuration that was selected - so now if another configuration is selected it will be compared against the 2x5 Configuration for determining move value expended cost.

One more note … Notice the button down at the bottom-right. When the application is closed it is not persisted - in other words, every time that you re-launch the application it basically makes you "start over"; however, since the Baseline button, Reset and End Round buttons are saving the state, I can get back to the last saved state by loading the highest round number for the formation. It works effectively like the Reset Round Button - but allows the user to pick back up where they left off, if they so desire. One thing to keep in mind, though - if a different faction/unit is selected and that is baselined - all other historical records are "blasted away" for the new baseline.

                WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

So there is still a lot to do! I got 2 of my 3 goals done, plus I got the "bonus sexy" look and feel implemented as well (so that's a plus). I think the thing I'll shoot for next is resetting move values based upon baselining, reseting, and ending rounds - and then apply the reconfiguration costs from the table to actual expended move value … that sounds reasonable.

Stay tuned! I'll continue to provide updates as it goes on!

Using the SBG Profiles from Warbands & The Hobbit to Extend the WotR Army Lists with Missing Profiles - Describing the Process [Part 1/13]

Over on www.one-ring.co.uk there are several posts about the missing profiles that are not contained within WotR, especially with the release of Warbands for SBG (which included several new models and profiles) and after the new Hobbit miniatures and profiles for SBG were also released. In order to help fill the gaps, it would make sense to use the SBG profiles and translate them over into a WotR profile to allow us dedicated players to have more access to those models and units.

One thing to note: This process is not an "exact science" and usually requires a little "creative liberty" to make it work; however, since we have the "formula" for calculating Unit Cost(s), it is an easy thing to crunch numbers for any "new" profile that we effectively create.

Here is the SBG profile for Tauriel from The Desolation of Smaug book for the Hobbit Strategy Battle Game:

First, it would make sense to have Tauriel be an Epic Hero in The Elven Kingdoms Faction within WotR. Recall that Epic Heroes in WotR only have 4 stat-line items: Fight Value, Resilience, Courage and Might. We can use the values directly from her SBG profile to begin to "fill in the gaps" for her Epic Hero Profile.

                    1. Tauriel's Fight Value from the SBG profile is a value of 6. Perfect - we can copy that directly into her WotR profile.
                    2. Tauriel's Wound Value from the SBG profile is 2 and she also has a Fate Value of 3. Recall from the SBG rules that Fate can be used to "discount a wound" on a roll of 4, 5, or 6 … this means that it in essence counts as "1/2 of a Wound Point". This would imply that Tauriel would then have 3.5 Wounds = Wound Value + 1/2 (Fate Value) = 2 + 1/2 (3) = 2 + 1.5 = 3.5. Since we must have Whole Number Values for profile statistics we could assign Tauriel's Resilience Value to be either 3 or 4. Looking at the set of profiles that already exist for models, 3 is a pretty rare value to have - and 4 is nonexistent … so 3 it is.
                    3. Tauriel's Courage Value from the SBG profile is a value of 6. OK - good enough, let's put that in for her WotR Courage Value.
                    4. Finally, Tauriel's Might Value from SBG is 3. So we can just use that, too for her WotR Might Value.
Cool - that worked pretty good. Let's now look at the special rules that she has:
                    1. Woodland Creature - This is a special rule that all Elves have in SBG. From a WotR perspective all Elves have the Special Rules: Pathfinder (Master) and Terror. It seems like these map 1:1 from SBG to WotR. Since Tauriel is going to be an Epic Hero, she gets the "Bestow" versions of: Bestow Pathfinder (Master) and Bestow Terror.
                    2. Blade Mistress - This is Tauriel's unique special rule. She should probably retain this in her Epic Hero Profile. Here is where the creative liberty is going to need to come into full effect. Reading the SBG version of the rule, we want to keep the "intent" of the rule - but put it into a WotR context.
As for the Wargear that she possesses in her SBG profile, WotR Epic Heroes typically inherit the weapons/armor of the unit in which they are participating - and do not typically have a "Bestow"-like capability for upgrades. So we won't worry about the Elven Cloak, Armor, Elf Bow, or Daggers.

Finally, Tauriel being an Epic Hero gains the standard set of Heroic Actions: Will of Iron, At the Double!, Heroic Move, Heroic Shoot, Heroic Charge, Heroic Fight and Heroic Duel. Also, we need to apply a "logical" set of Epic Actions to her as well.

A good way to think about this is to consider the set of Epic Actions that already exist within the target faction and try to find opportunities to "fill the gaps" that exist. It seems like making a list of Epic Actions and then analyzing the character's role within the films also works pretty well. If you see the character constantly shooting a bow - then maybe Epic Shot is a good choice. If you see the character going "nuts" because of some "psychological complication", maybe Epic Rage is a good choice.

A good number to shoot for is about 3-4 Epic Actions, we don't want the Hero to become too expensive just because we want a "superhero(ine)". Try to reign in the desire to assign everything to the unit - after all, if adding the character creates a substantial unbalance when played, it will be obvious when the model is included - and will inevitability result in an annoyed opponent. Constantly keep the following thought in mind: "If I never got to play this unit - and it was regularly used against me … what would I think of it?"

Finally, if there is something that is "really unique" to the character that is worth of Epic Stature, which does not currently have an Epic Action associated with it … then it may be a candidate for a new Epic Action. Which do-able, it is suggested that this be "the exception, not the rule" (pun somewhat intended, lol).

Here is the complete list of Vanilla WotR Epic Actions and the typical assignee:

                    • Epic Strike
Let's look at the list again, mark those that already are "covered" by the list with an (*) and determine which "make sense" for Tauriel (colored green):
                    • (*) Epic Challenge - Yes
                    • (*) Epic Channelling - No
                    • (*) Epic Charge - Yes
                    •      Epic Cowardice - No
                    • (*) Epic Defense - No
                    •      Epic Duel - Yes
                    •      Epic Intervention - No
                    •      Epic Journey - No
                    • (*) Epic Leadership - No
                    •      Epic Poison - No
                    • (*) Epic Rage - Yes
                    •      Epic Rampage - Yes
                    • (*) Epic Renewal - No
                    • (*) Epic Restoration - No
                    •      Epic Ruination - No
                    • (*) Epic Sacrifice - No
                    • (*) Epic Shot - Yes
                    •      Epic Strength - No
                    • (*) Epic Strike - Yes
                    •      Epic Tranquility - No
Let's give her Epic Duel, Epic Rage and Epic Strike. She will then cover a new Epic Hero Ability with Epic Duel, her Epic Rage fits well with the movie's Star-crossed Lovers with Kili, and as a Duelist Epic Strike is always useful.

Now we can use the equation to calculate her Cost. Whew, this is digging WAY back in the list of posts …

Based upon the profile for the Epic Hero Tauriel:
                    • Cst = 10 (Epic)
                    • F = 6
                    • R = 3
                    • C = 6
                    • Mt = 3
                    • Ar = 0 (Epic Hero)
                    • XWpn = 0 (Epic Hero)
                    • SpR = 6 (Bestow Pathfinders (Master), Bestow Terror, Blade Mistress, Epic Strike, Epic Rage, and Epic Duel) - [Remember that the Heroic Actions are "free".]
Plugging all this into the equation gives:

                    COST OF HERO PROFILE = {[(Cst)*5]+[(F-4)*5]+[(R-2)*5]+[(C-4)*5]+[(Mt-2)*10]+[(Ar)*5]+[(XWpn)*5]+[(SpR)*10]}

                    = {[(10)*5]+[(6-4)*5]+[(3-2)*5]+[(6-4)*5]+[(3-2)*10]+[(0)*5]+[(0)*5]+[(6)*10]}
                    = {[50]+[(2)*5]+[(1)*5]+[(2)*5]+[(1)*10]+[0]+[0]+[60]}
                    = {[50]+[10]+[5]+[10]+[10]+[0]+[0]+[60]}
                    = 145

This gives 145 Points for this profile.

Putting it all together, here is what her profile would look like:

That's pretty cool - and exciting, too! I can't wait to get her into a formation of Wood Elves and see how she works out!
